Abstract [en]

Provision of intimate care is a challenge for the care worker, as well as for the recipient of care, in terms both of how this care is to be performed and of how to manage feelings such as anxiety and embarrassment. In home care services, most intimate care work is performed by non-professionals who have received little or no formal or in-house training, and who are at risk of being left to devise their own methods or coping strategies. This article reports on a participant observation study of intimate care in home care services in Sweden. The strategies used to handle intimacy in care work displayed similarities, as well as dissimilarities, to those of professional framing identified in earlier studies of medical and nursing practice. There are similarities in terms of how framing was accomplished in a balance between a distanced matter-of-fact stance and one of personal acknowledgement created in interplay between care workers and care recipient. There are dissimilarities in terms of the challenges presented by the home care setting. As the relationship between care worker and care recipient in intimate care is a particularly precarious one, lack of guidance and formal training may hamper care and lead to neglect.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In the Nordic countries, at a time when women have only recently won the right to their own bodies and to a sexuality of  their own and for themselves, women nevertheless fake orgasms. Moreover, a common question posed to the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU) deals with lack of desire. Not only are women faking and complaining of lack of desire, but men as well. It seems that contemporary ideals surrounding sexuality converge with quests for not only pleasure and love, but also for fitting in and experiencing what is conceived of as normal and “successful” sexuality. This essay examines the contemporary and prevalent phenomenon of faked orgasms from the perspectives of feminist theory and phenomenology.

Abstract [en]

This study examines the expressions and experiences of everyday ageism among elderly retired people. Remarkably little attention has previously been paid to how elderly people themselves experience everyday ageism. The phenomenon of everyday ageism is both neglected and demanding to identify and analyse. This pilot study uses focus group interviews and birthday card vignettes in order to encourage informants to speak freely and discuss their experiences of attitudes towards ageing. The results of the pilot study show ancillary perceptions, agreements and silences that are characteristic of everyday ageism, and either directly related to the vignettes or to other everyday experiences. It is emphasised that the phenomenon at hand is multifaceted and complex. Methodological implications are discussed in order to shed light on the uncovering of signifiers and intersecting signifiers of everyday ageism. The study demonstrates a particularly useful approach in researching everyday ageism.
