Abstract [en]

It is not until the fourteenth century that written records offer a glimpse into the coastal societies of Northern Sweden. Records include references to a social stratum referred to as the birkarlar, who were tradesmen engaged in trading with the Sami. The origin of the birkarlar, their prominent status and the meaning of the term, is an enigma that has been much disputed among scholars although there is consensus about the economic and fiscal supremacy of birkarlar vis-a-vis the Sami. However, the paradox of tradesmen employing force against their most important circle of suppliers and customers remains a puzzle. The birkarla institution is analyzed by means of alternative reading of historical records from the perspective of the indigenous Sami and coastal farming communities. The postulated animosity between Sami and the birkarlar is critically examined in light of the social and economic context of interior and coastal communities during the Late Iron Age and Early Medieval period, and in relation to historically known Sami kinship relationships and marriage traditions. Data are analyzed with regard to demography and social structure, and from a landscape perspective including the logistics and practicalities of inter-cultural contact. Analyses corroborate that birkarlar were deeply rooted in the coastal communities and fully involved in the regular subsistence activities. They were representatives given a commission of trust and contacts between the birkarlar and the Sami were characterized by mutuality and inter-dependence.

Abstract [en]

This anthology is the outcome of a Nordic literacy-conference held at Umeå University in Sweden in June 2012, where the focus was vernacular literacy practices of the past, of the present and of the future. Vernacular literacy practices have become increasingly prominent in everyday life, especially in social media through digital technology. However, vernacular literacy is not a new phenomenon. The written word has been used for everyday purposes throughout history, in various media and using different technologies. Twenty papers from the conference are presented in this volume, with a predominance of articles dealing with the past. The historical section embraces literacy practices through the Viking Age

to the beginning of the twentieth century in Iceland, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Estonia. The contemporary section includes workplace literacies, digital literacies and literacy practices in the educational domain in a Swedish context.

The volume is multi-lingual with articles in English and in the Scandinavian languages. The articles written in Swedish, Danish or Norwegian are accompanied by abstracts in English. The conference was hosted and organized by the Nordic network Vernacular Literacies, in cooperation with the Nordic project Reading and Writing from Below, and was funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (‘The Swedish foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences’). Letterstedska föreningen and the Department of Language Studies at Umeå University have contributed to the production of the volume.

Abstract [en]

This paper presents an customized implementation of  the QVIZ-browser to support a multitude of research question towards a structured dataset of Nordic dialects, DIABAS. This is enabled by so called facetted browsing. of the relational database structure. Faceted browsing allows the creation of unpredictable arrangements of search criteria by the user. The system has been customized to support this rather new explorative mode of data mining combined with tools to make working map for future publication. The combination of data mining and creation of visual map enables the research to be using the system for analysis as well as providing content for planned publication Språkatlas (Founded by KGAA)

The paper will mainly describe how the tool has been used to prepare the publication and how it has been used by the involved researchers with examples of research questions. The analysis of design and its usage will combine knowledge from the research area of Nordic Dialects as well as expertise of the query building mechanism involved under the hood of the system.

In the paper the collaborative work will be described where special focus is on the translations process between the properties of the content, the research questions foreseen and the potentials and problems with the tools being used.
