Symposium on Enzymes in Nucleic Acid synthesis
Abstract [sv]
26-29 Mars 2009, Hemavan, Sweden. Life depends on the ability to express genes and pass on the genetic material from generation to generation. This involves a large set of proteins which copies the genome, i.e. RNA polymerase, DNA polymerase and factors supporting the polymerases, and another set of proteins which synthesize the building blocks of nucleic acids, ribonucleotides and deoxyribonucleotides. These enzymes are closely connected with the development of diseases, e.g. cancer, genetic diseases, and metabolic disorders. Many medicines target these enzymes and allow treatment of some diseases. To provide a meeting which could catalyze novel ideas and new collaborations, we will bring together scientists from diverse scientific fields such as microbiology, cell biology, virology, parasitology, genetics, and structural biology. Our hope is that the blend of scientists studying infectious diseases and mammalian systems could create platforms where new drug targets could be identified and explored over the coming years. This conference will highlight the 40th anniversary of highly purified ribonucleotide reductase from E. coli. Initial studies on crude extracts and partially purified enzymes suggested that ribonucleotide reductase was a delicate and highly regulated enzyme. The ability to purify both subunits of E. coli to homogeneity allowed detailed studies of the enzyme activity and structural properties, something which still interests scientists four decades later.
