Title [sv]
Utveckling av modeller, mätning- och analysmetoder för centrala nervsystemets biofluidmekanik - med applikation för neurologiska sjukdomar
Title [en]
Development of models, measurements and estimation methods for biofluid mechanics of the CNS for investigation of neurological disorders
Abstract [sv]
Biofluid mechanics of the central nervous system (CNS) describes the flows and pressures of blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The field provides a platform for understanding the pathophysiology of many neurological disorders. The main purpose of this project is to improve the understanding craniospinal biofluid mechanics, in order to find better methods for the diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular diseases and dementias. We plan to accomplish this by development and evaluation of mathematical models including the intracranial and spinal hemodynamics and CSF dynamics, together with advanced MR based methods in combination with invasive CSF infusion tests. Evaluations will be done in phantom studies and clinical studies. New signal processing methods for parameter estimation will be used to characterize the craniospinal biofluid mechanics. Biomedical engineering research is the central part of this project and there are several ideas within the project that are patentable and have commercialization potential. The findings of this project, accomplished by innovative technical solutions, will be utilized in clinical studies and, if applicable, immediately translated to clinical practice in order to assist in diagnosis and treatment planning.
