Age-related decline in cognitive and brain functions is unfortunately a common situation for most elderly. This is affecting their ability to perform several important daily life tasks such as planning the day or reading a newspaper. It has been suggested that this may be associated with failure within the dopamine system. Memory training has shown to have good effects on memory performance in elderly. However, memory training results in specific training related improvements but little transfer to other cognitive functions. Recent findings suggest that aerobic exercise is affecting the human body globally including oxygen uptake, dopamine release and also cognitive functions. Thus, aerobic exercise could potentially reduce this risk, or at least delay the onset, of age related cognitive decline and provide neuroprotective benefits. The aim of this project is to investigate how aerobic exercise is affecting brain function and its relation to improved cognitive function of elderly. We will use positron emission tomography (PET/CT) and target the dopamine system, pre and post a 6 month intervention. We will have an extensive cognitive as well as fitness test battery and compare the results in an aerobic training group of elderly to potential changes in a non-aerobic control group. The importance of this project is vast since it will give important insights into lifelong brain plasticity and possibly find ways of improving the quality of life for our aging population
