Title [en]
Remoulding Engineering: Knowledge and Identity Perspectives on Project Work in Engineering Education
Abstract [sv]
Currently, many engineering educations all over the world move towards implementing project-organised courses with the aim of fostering better team-working skills as well as better learning outcomes. This project offer novel perspectives on students´ knowledge and identity development in this context through investigating students? interaction when working together. The aim is to explore learning and shared knowledge as being established in the project groups through talk and gestures as well as the utilization of artefacts, what identities are favoured and disfavoured in relation to the project courses, and how learning and the identities narrated and negotiated within the practice intersect. Empirical data will be collected through systematic observations and video-recordings of students during selected engineering courses, complemented with individual interviews with the participants. As analytical tools we will use Distributed Cognition and discourse psychology. Even though the empirical data will be on engineering education, we expect general findings of working in project-organised courses to be transferable to other contexts in higher education and have the potential to contribute to a better learning outcome in project courses. Theoretically and empirically grounded related descriptions of both knowledge and identify will also be an important contribution.
