Title [sv]
Molekylära angreppssätt för att förstå biotillgänglighet av metylkvicksilver bundet till olika typer av naturligt löst organiskt material
Title [en]
A molecular approach to understand bioavailability of methylmercury associated with variable sources of natural dissolved organic matter
Abstract [en]
Climate change and urbanization threaten to increase coastal mercury (Hg) concentrations andthe bioaccumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) into coastal food webs which will enhance human and wildlifeexposure to this neurotoxic chemical. Elevated MeHg is the most common reason for fish consumption advisories bythe US EPA, and is one of the top ten chemicals of public health concern by WHO. A key step in the MeHg cycle, and the exposure risk to humans, is its incorporation into the base of the aquatic food web. However, knowledge onthe mechanisms controlling MeHg bioavailability to plankton and bacteria remains elusive. The objective of thisproposed research is to improve the current understanding of such mechanisms by describing in unprecedenteddetail the molecular level processes that control the chemical speciation of MeHg in coastal ecosystems. This type ofresearch is only possible due to recent analytical advancements made at Umeå University (UmU). The project willlead to a long-term strategic cooperation between the University of Connecticut (UConn) and UmU, and willundoubtedly improve the quality of the fellow?s thesis research. The understanding of refined molecular levelprocesses gained through this research is expected to make a high impact on future Hg biogeochemical research.
