Title [sv]
Växelverkan mellan magnetiska fält och plasmaflöden - Ett doktorandprojekt angående vikten av instabiliteter
Title [en]
The interplay between plasma flows and magnetic fields in Earth's magnetotail - A PhD project on the importance of instabilities
Abstract [en]
Plasma flows and magnetic fields play an important role in various astrophysical objects. The flows can transport large amounts of magnetic flux, mass and energy through a system, while the magnetic fields have the ability to influence the flow motion. One type of interaction between magnetic fields and plasma flows is through the concept of plasma instabilities. Here we propose a PhD project, which focuses on the importance of plasma instabilities for the interaction between plasma flows and magnetic fields in the Earth's magnetotail. We will address three important subtopics: (1) Field line resonances - sources and sinks, (2) Kink-like magnetotail oscillations - implications for H+/O+ plasmas, (3) The generation of dipolarization fronts. We will study the generation of various types of oscillations in the magnetotail, and their influence on a multi-component plasma. The project results will have far-reaching consequence for our understanding of, e.g., atmospheric escape and the general background magnetotail flow pattern. We will also investigate the interaction between magnetic fields and plasma flows in the generation of so called dipolarization fronts, which are hot topics within magnetospheric physics. We will use multi-spacecraft data, initially from Cluster, for our investigations. By designing our project wisely, we will be able to use data from the upcoming MMS mission as soon as it enters science phase. By selecting co-supervisors with key competence and from highly reputed international institutes, we will guarantee best possible conditions for the PhD student.
