TROUBLESOME TRANSITIONS School-to-work transitions of young people at risk in a longitudinal perspective

Many young Swedes have weak links to the labour market. Leaving school without complete grades from a 3-year upper-secondary program is the biggest risk factor in this case. The project (1) aims to deepen the knowledge about young people´s careers after compulsory school. Central questions: How are their careers related to participation in different educational pathways? Which regional and local differences between career paths exist, and how can they be explained? How do early school-leavers describe their careers after compulsory school? (2) A second aim is to produce knowledge about local measures to support school-to-work transitions and the extent to which such measures are successful. Central questions: What strategies and programs exist or develop at local level at present, a very challenging and difficult time? How successful are different organisational models and measures to prevent school dropout and establishment at the labour market? The project combines longitudinal large-scale investigations of youth transitions with in depth interviews with young people. A national survey of transition policies is combined with case studies in appr. 20 municipalities. Structural and institutional analysis is paired with biographical analysis. Earlier Swedish studies are largely descriptive in character, the policy perspective is little studied, as are regional and local variations of career paths and support of transitions. Here the project is expected to add new knowledge.
