Women’s decision-making process to undergo hysterectomy (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Abstract

Background: Hysterectomy is an operative intervention where the uterus is removed. The reason for this procedure may be due to myoma or endometriosis.

Aim: The aim of the literature study was to describe the women’s decision-making process for a possible hysterectomy due to benign disease.

Method: A literature review based on 8 scientific articles where the results showed how women process the decision-making process into possible hysterectomy. The searches were made in PubMed, Cinahl and PsycINFO. The articles include adult women from different parts of the world describing how they reach the decision to undergo surgery. The articles used are written in English and published after 2000.

Results: The result is presented in two categories, before decision-making and decision-making, describing the factors that influence the decision as well as the definitive factors that affected the decision to ultimately undergo the surgery. Many women highlighted family and friends and their opinions as a strong contributing factor to what decision was made.

Conclusion: Many women consider that several factors are contributing to the choice of undergoing hysterectomy for instance, information, life situation, finances and the support of the family.
