Abstract [en]

User surveillance and gathering of data are an increasing part of the Internet and its services. Companies today are utilizing the Internet to collect consumer-generated information in order to create targeted advertising used to connect with potential customers. We found it relevant to investigate the awareness of Internet users, whether or not they have knowledge of what happens to the information that they leave behind on the Internet. The purpose is to examine how Internet users reason when it comes to their privacy on the Internet and if there is any difference in awareness and reflections due to age or education level, when it comes to data storage and surveillance on the Internet. 

A survey was done through interviews and a questionnaire in order to collect information on how Internet users reflect on data storage and surveillance. Also, if they are aware of how consumer-generated information can be used. The collected material is then discussed in an analysis and compared with, and linked to, previous research. Previous research treats the theorists Michel Foucault about power and Jeremy Bentham and his concept panopticon. Also, the study uses the term “Digital Natives/Digital Immigrants” of Mark Prensky and Stig Hadenius discussion about digital media and the difference between the generations. The study found that awareness is not much difference in age, but more the level of education you have. The older generation proves to be more careful when it comes to their privacy on the Internet. The younger generation limiting themselves less, because they feel that they can not move on with the internet if they do not give out their private information. In general, the results showed that the knowledge is low among most Internet users when it comes to include cookies and internet policies.
