The Swedish Principle is the Christian Principle : Christian Unity and the Welfare State during World War II (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to investigate how the idea of a Swedish Christian identity was used and expressed in the motto ”Den svenska linjen är den kristna linjen”, (”The Swedish principle is the Christian principle”) during World War II. The motto originates from a joint statement of the 23rd November 1941, formulated by the first meeting of representatives from the Swedish state and the Church of Sweden. The analysis of the essay draws upon mostly primary sources including notes from meetings and newspaper articles discussing or reacting to the motto. The motto can be seen as a reaction to the threat of war, the weakened state of the Church of Sweden, and the experience that there was a threat against the Lutheran church. A need of social cultural unity arose, which produced the thought of a Swedish collective identity based on a vaguely expressed Christian message. In the few explanations of the motto, one can catch sight of notions of uniting concepts as the folkhem and the folkkyrka. Despite an overall positive response to the motto, it was also criticized for lacking relevance and power. In the latter part of the essay, I discuss the changing role of the Church of Sweden. There I state that the view of a Swedish Christian exclusive community has been further challenged in a more multi religious and cultural society. Along with the focus on climate and refugee issues, the institution has gained an orientation towards more humanitarian work and interreligious dialogue.
