Abstract [en]

Caries distribution in the population is skewed: a minority of the population is the most affected by the caries disease. These patients are not helped by the caries prevention therapies currently offered by dental professionals. Therefore, researchers continuously strive to identify new etiological factors and risk factors and most importantly, new ways to prevent and treat caries lesions. This study aims to identify dentists’ experiences of working with caries prevention. Dentists from five different dental health clinics in the northern part of Sweden, were interviewed in five focus groups. The interviews were recorded, transcribed to text and later analysed using the Qualitative content analysis method.

The results yielded nine subcategories that formed the four categories: “Unclear responsibilities”,” Lack of resources”,” The complexity of caries treatment” and “The importance of good communication”. The theme “An endless loop” was derived from the categories. This study provides an insight into experienced dentists’ experiences of and attitudes to working with caries prevention. In general, a pessimistic and uncertain attitude was expressed towards caries prevention. In order to improve caries prevention there is a need to, in detail, identify and work through the hindering factors: lack of resources, uninterest in the caries disease, the uncertainty of where the responsibility lies and lack of communication skills.
