Pasolinis ”immanent framing” av efterföljelsedramat: : En film analys av Matteusevangeliet (1964) (svensk)
Abstract [en]

This examensarbete is an investigation of director Pier Paolo Pasolini’s transformation of the discipleship theme in the 1964 film Il vangelo secondo Matteo (The Gospel According to St. Matthew). Employing Charles Taylor’s notion “immanent framing”, and the method of shot-by-shot film analysis, I argue that Pasolini immanentizes the gospel story and flattens the New Testament cosmos. Supernatural causes, like the angel’s commanding Joseph to marry Mary, are represented by Pasolini as having natural, psychological explanations. The three-storey cosmos (heaven, earth, and hell) imagined by the evangelist is flattened in the film to a single storey (earth). In the examensarbete, I propose that the film’s immanent framing of the discipleship theme is typical of the way commercial media (as opposed to traditional religious institutions) mediate religion. When religious information and experiences are framed by film (and other commercial media), and films become an “optional artefact” for the teaching of religion in the classroom, pedagogical practices may be subordinated to, and dependent on, commercial media institutions whose ends are not primarily pedagogical. The social imaginary represented by the text of the gospel is replaced and banalized by the modern social imaginary (“the immanent frame”) mediated by the Bible film. Thus relating Charles Taylor’s theory of “immanent framing” to Stig Hjarvard’s theory of the mediatization of religion, this examensarbete investigates the implications of employing commercial film as an “optional artefact” for the teaching of religion in the classroom.
