Preliminary dimensioning of concrete joists in serviceability limit state (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

This thesis, conducted in collaboration with Norconsult, focuses on developing an Excelbased calculation tool and tables to predict deflections in concrete joists. The primary purpose of this project is to provide a tool that enables fast and reliable preliminary dimensioning calculations for concrete structures, directly accessible via Excel. This approach is particularly valuable as it allows engineers and designers to perform necessary calculations without the need for expensive and limited software.  The work stems from the current technical and economic limitations within the construction industry, where access to calculation programs is often limited to licensed software. This can create bottlenecks in workflows, especially when many users need access to the tools simultaneously. By developing a calculation tool in Excel, which is both accessible and cost-effective, this work offers a solution that could expand accessibility and streamline work processes for engineers.  This thesis also includes a review and comparison of concrete as a building material in relation to other materials, especially glulam, focusing on its environmental impact and sustainability aspects. Concrete's ability to bind carbon dioxide during its lifecycle and its widespread use in the construction industry make it a critical material to study in light of global sustainability goals. The findings from the study show that concrete, despite its challenges related to high initial CO2- emissions, has the potential to be considered a more sustainable option when its complete lifecycle and carbon-binding capabilities are taken into account.  The work involves a discussion of the calculation models used to simulate the mechanical behavior of concrete under various loading conditions. Comparisons are made between simplified methods and more detailed methods. This analysis emphasizes the importance of understanding the complex aspects of concrete's material behavior, as the results of the calculations differ significantly.  In summary, this thesis provides valuable insights and tools for engineers and other professionals in the building and construction sector. It highlights the need for continued research and development within calculation methods and materials science to improve and optimize the use of concrete and other building materials in an increasingly sustainable construction industry.
