Coach Educators inUEFA B : Experiences and Factors Behind Women’s Underrepresentation inCoaching (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

This study investigated the perspectives and experiences of coach educators in the UEFA B training program, a Swedish certification for football coaches aimed at enhancing their knowledge and skills. It also explored why women are underrepresented in coaching roles. Data were collected through one online survey from 21 coach educators and analyzed in conjunction with existing research to identify patterns, trends, and areas for improvement. The findings highlighted an important need to enhance gender equality in coaching education, particularly by making the environment more inclusive for women. The historical dominance of men in coaching education has influenced perceptions of leadership and competence, contributing to the underrepresentation of women as coaches. The results showed that there is a need for a stronger focus on pedagogy, leadership, and gender equality in coaching education. Efforts should be directed towards creating opportunities for women in coaching, such as implementing gender equality policies and offering support and resources for female coaches. Moreover, although the study identified a need for more gender equality training for coach educators, many of the coaches lacked formal education on the topic. This underscores the importance of providing formal training to ensure consistency and inclusivity in coaching education. Overall, the study suggests that by addressing gender equality issues and providing adequate support and training, coaching education can become more diverse and inclusive, thereby attracting more women to the coaching profession.
