Abstract [en]
“Deport the guilty” - a critical discourse analysis of the reporting of the events in Cologne that took place on New Years Eve 2015.
This thesis examines the coverage in the Swedish newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet of the events that took place in Cologne, Germany during New Years Eve of 2015. There were several hundred police reports filed, mostly regarding sexual abuse but also robbery and rape. The media coverage was extensive, also in swedish media. The focus of this thesis main focus is to survey what causes were said to have led up to the events, which sources were used to represent the events, and how the perpetrators were represented. We have examined ten newspaper articles from the first week of reporting about the events, namely 5/1-11/1 2016. The theoretical points used are critical discourse analysis, representation and stereotypes (van Dijk, Hall) combined with earlier studies on the subject of media representation of events involving immigrants (Brune, van Dijk).
Using a critical discourse analysis combined with a semiotic analysis, this study finds that the representation of the events in Cologne mainly focuses on immigration as the reason. The newspapers highlight the reactions after the events, focusing on Germany’s immigration policy as the main reason behind the events. By implicitly and explicitly placing the blame on immigrants, the representation of the perpetrators contributes to strengthening stereotypes of racial minorities, constructing the “other” as something different from “us” and consequently naturalizing differences between westerners and others to benefit the status quo that is white dominance. This process is inherent in the system of news reporting, as earlier studies as well as this study shows that elite sources such as politicians and police are given the most space to comment on the events and draw the final conclusion that frame the events. Immigrants are discriminated, as they do not get to comment on issues that regard them. The newspapers are not blatantly racist, but their representation of the events in Cologne and the focus on immigration as a threat could help reproduce xenophobic ideas in society.
