Abstract [en]

Due to the increasing amount of refugees in Sweden and the ongoing discussion on parliamentary level about integration, discrimination and implementation concerning immigrants into Swedish society, this study aims to investigate the possible effects of implementing Positive Action policies based on ethnicity into the Swedish Labour Market. The aim of this study has been to investigate the attitudes and level of felt threat in Sweden towards Immigration in order to predict how Swedish employees might receive the existence of Positive Action policies based on ethnicity. By using microdata from ISSP, we aimed to find out how the Swedish employees feel about their peers with immigrant background and if these attitudes vary among different positions within the labour market. We also carried out a literature review in order to find out what kind of positive and negative consequences Positive Action may bring with it if it is implemented into the Swedish Labour Market. Our own empirical analysis indicates that overall, the attitudes towards immigrants are positive among employees in Sweden. We found more positive attitudes towards immigrants among employees with high wages, high educational level, and working in professions with high skill requirements. The attitudes are quite similar between private and public sector. Our literature review indicated that while policies such as Positive Action are expected to increase ethnic diversity among employees, they might also bring some unintended, detrimental effects.
