CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS TO SUCCED WITH A MEGAPROJECT : –A CASE STUDY OF THE STOCKHOLM CITY LINK PROJECT (Engelska)
Abstract [en]

The Stockholm City link have been one of the biggest infrastructure project of the last decenniums in Sweden. The goal of the megaproject was to build a new 6 km railway tunnel under Stockholm, two new commuter train stations (In total approximately 2,0 billion Euro) and to buy 46 new Alstom train sets (over 0, 5 billion Euro). All this to achieve a doubling of the capacity of railway traffic through the central parts of the Stockholm area.The purpose of this study is to understand which lessons learned (LL) there are to be found from the mega project of the Stockholm City link. This to make it possible for future mega projects to learn from the Stockholm City link project failures/successes.The goal for the study is to deliver a result that sum up the LL, wrong turns along with successful steps, there are from the mega project of the Stockholm City link. There is also a goal to see if the result from this study is supported by the present-day international research in the science of critical success factors (CSF) in megaprojects. As a method to reach the goals and purpose a case study is being conducted as the means of getting empirical information from fours LL sessions where as many as 100 people participate from both the mega projects PM-organizations as well as important stakeholders from the operator- and client organisations. The CSF ́s found will be tested against the CSF found in Radujković & Mišić (2015) research.The results from this study are questioning the traditional methods of measuring success and questions are also being raised if the iron triangle ́s edges in fact are the best toolbox to set up, control and measure success in megaprojects. The result from this study, along with contemporary research ( (Radujković & Mišić, 2015) (Romãoa, 2016) and more, are pointing out that the areas of project management and the stakeholder management are some of the most vital and important CSF to make a megaproject successful. One of findings in this case study, as a difference to most of the previous research of CSF in megaprojects, are the focus and importance placed on having a good and solid demand management and testing management organization/structure in the megaproject from early beginning to the final delivery to the client organization. Can this be a new important finding that get more important as a CSF in future megaprojects as IT-systems and functions get more sophisticated, more important and more complexed? This is an important hypothesis for future mega project research to study with perhaps a quantitative approach.
