The lack of residential housing has occasionally been a
problem in Sweden. The total population has grown faster
than the construction of residential buildings. However,
societies and housing were established in new places during
the industrialization because of new findings of natural
resources in the northern parts of Sweden. Due to
modernization later, these societies were decreasing in
population due to the technological development. Today
these societies are being reindustrialized hence to the green
transition. This study aims to describe and analyze the
relation of industrial establishments to housing on a local
level in Skellefteå. Two different industries are compared: a
mining industry from the 1920’s and an electric battery
industry establishing today. Different literature sources were
studied as a qualitative empirical material. The material was
analyzed in a thematical analysis with three different themes:
strategy, division of responsibilities and housing solutions as
well as association life. Social sustainability is also being
analyzed within the different themes.
The results of the study show the relations to housing differs
between the companies, the main reason being the
establishments in two different eras, a century apart.
However, the social sustainability is shown in divergent
ways. For the mining industry, providing housing for
everyone showcases the importance of social sustainability.
Whereas the contemporary case showcase that the social
sustainability with providing housing is not within the agenda
of the company.
