Control of Japanese rose (Rosa rugosa) in Västerbotten : A studie of the different methods effect on the populations (Engelska)
Abstract [en]

Invasive species have been a growing problem in Sweden for many years. One of these species is Rosa rugosa. Länsstyrelsen Västerbotten has been trying to eradicate it in places like Snöan and Holmön, two island close to the coast of Västerbotten. The main methods that have been used is coverage and “method of exhaustion”.  When using the covering method, the population of R. rugosa is first cut down and then covered with either jute tarp or thick or thin plastic tarp. With the method of exhaustion green leaves are picked from the plant, a technique that prevent the plant to photosynthesize. 31 populations of Rosa rugosa have been studied where 19 has been combated with coverage and 12 have been combated with, exhaustion since 2020. The populations have been studied to see if the methods of eradication have had any effects on the plants, and if a trend can be observed on the populations that has been “exhausted” for two and three years. I visited 9 populations, out of the 31, 2023 to make observations and to measure the 9 populations. This data was then analyzed together with data from 2020 and 2022, given to me by Länsstyrelsen Västerbotten. The data from them also included status of the populations 2022 as well as the original size of the populations, 2020. More than half of the populations that had been combated with coverage was classed as “non-viable” and the rest was classed as “almost dead” in 2022. In comparison with the method of exhaustion where no populations could be classed “non-viable”, the method of covering could be deemed more effective. This could therefore be the preferred method for eradication of R. rugosa. When studying the difference between two and three years of exhaustion it could be observed that a few of the 9 populations had changed in status between 2022-2023 and some had not changed. A difference could therefore be observed between two and three years of exhaustion for some of the populations. Overall, all of the 31 populations need to be revisited for a few more years if eradication is to be achieved, but the method of covering R. rugosa seems to be a more effective method when it comes to removing the invasive plant. Method of exhaustion could however be a good alternative for populations of R. rugosa that grow in hard to cover places like between big rocks.
