Abstract [en]

This thesis concerns some of the methods used for self-defence (grip techniques) at the Police Programme at Umeå University. The purpose of the thesis is to contribute to a more including and legally secure educational programme by examining female students experiences of learning and using grip techniques within the self-defence courses, and by analysing how gender is being presented in some of the Programme’s teaching material, concerning grip techniques in self-defence courses. To be able to make this contribution, I have interviewed five female students at the Police Programme and analysed some of the teaching material concerning grip techniques, which consists of short film clips where teachers are showing how to implement the techniques.I made this study from the point of view of standpoint theory, the feministic theory presented by Iris Marion Young, and Richard Dyer’s theory of stereotypes. The conclusions drawn in this thesis are in summary that female students, at the Police Programme at Umeå University, are positive towards learning self-defence in general, but they find some of the grip techniques problematic to use, since they experience that they are not tall enough to get some techniques to be efficient. They sometimes also experience that they are not strong enough to get some techniques to be efficient. Another conclusion is that gender, in some ways, is presented in a stereotypical way in the teaching material. The ongoing stereotype of a police officer being a man might contribute to the fact that there is a lack of gender perspective in the self-defence techniques, since some techniques seem to be useable only for students/officers with the average height of a man.
