Abstract [en]

This paper deals with the effect that the 18th and 19th century swedish revivals had on the emigration to America. Due to the law of 1726 against any practice of religion that was not the one preached by the established church, many swedes had to take their belief some place else. America offered a sanctuary for these grops of people due to its freedom of religion. The fanatic so called Erik Jansonist Movement from Alfta parish in Hälsningland is thought to be the first revival movement whos members emigrated from Sweden due to religious reasons. These people belived that their leader Erik Jansson was Messias and that America was the land of Kanaan. The fact that Jansson himself had been put in prison for his faith also made it imposible for his movement to stay in Sweden unless they aplied by the law and were forced back in to the swedeish church community. This revival later gave inspiration to other religious movements to emigrate from Sweden and start a new life in America. Amongst the biggest ones were the swedish lutherians and the Baptists wich this paper also includes. Both these groups had a substantial number of followers but the swedish lutherians were the ones who recruited the most number of people once they had established themselves in America. The Baptist Movement was already big in America wich made it easier for the swedish Baptists to settle there. In this paper I debate wether these people realy emigrated because of their belief or if their belief was one of many reasons. Also, I try to work out how much these emigrated revivals bacame the inspiration to other people in their emigration, believers or not.
