The project is about improving the street life of one of Dharavi’s main roads; Station Road.
Today the street has a formal layout; with a sidewalk and two car lanes, without any
response to what is actually happening on the street. The street vendors occupy a large
portion of the supposed sidewalk, forcing inhabitants to stay inside and pedestrians out into
the road, making traffic crawl along.
Therefore the goal of the project is to create spaces where positive exchange can take
place between these different actors of the street, letting them coexist within the same
space as today. By looking at the relation between street vendors & pedestrians and street
& residences I’ve tried to create an architecture that invites to a certain behaviour without
enforcing spatial rules. Through my intervention I want to promote the dynamic street life
that is going on already today, but at the same time the intervention should improve the
climatic situation of the street as well as being a response to the rich culture of Dharavi. This
is my way of organizing the chaos there, making life a little bit easier.
