Abstract [en]

Nursing shortage is globally increasing, but it is much more serious in Sweden due to aging of the population which the nursing work force is part of. Shortage management is a challenge for the health care as it requires actions both on local/region and national level to deliver the required health care service in order to keep a healthy population.  For the time being, urgent actions are required to manage health care services and to have a sustainable nursing work force.  A devoted nurse leader is necessary to improve the working conditions for the nurses which positively affects their life inside and outside work.

Researches done on nursing shortage management in some countries but not in Sweden.

This thesis have developed a study-protocol based on qualitative methods with in-depth research interviews as the data collecting tool. Qualitative content analysis will applied to get deep understanding of nursing shortage by triangulating the component of nursing shortage.

This thesis developed interview tools and conceptual framework from a pilot study in Umea in combination with an extensive literature review. The interview guide will save time and motivate others for further research in Sweden and other countries.

The research is expected to come up with suggestions for nursing shortage management which can be presented to the organizations and government.
