Abstract [en]

Background: It is common that female endurance athletes have an insufficient dietary intake. Female athletes, especially endurance athletes, are a target group for negative health issues due to poor dietary intake. There is a lot of research done on what female endurance athletes dietary intake looks like, and what problems exists among female endurance athletes, but how can the prevalence still be so big? Purpose: The main purpose of this study was to analyze published research in female endurance athletes’ dietary intake and its medical consequences. This is a literature study with the search period for articles between April 2018 and June 2018.

Results: A lot of studies exists investigating the nutrition habits, eating patterns and dietary intake among female endurance athletes. It is seen that the poor dietary intake is the main reason why the health issues occur among female endurance athletes, like the female athlete triad, low energy availability and functional hypothalamic oligomenorrhea. The results showed that female endurance athletes tend not to reach the international nutritional recommendations and guidelines.

Conclusion: Amongst all the research that exist about the risks and problems with female endurance athletes’ dietary intake, tends to be generalized and difficult to apply for an individual. There is a gap between the research and the practice. There is no ultimate “golden standard” yet set to use for this cause. It is for future research to investigate.
