Calculating water loss within the district heating systems, in regards to changes in volume (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

With the help of an approximately 300 km long district heating network containing about 13 000 m3 of water as a heat carrier Sundsvall Energi AB supplies Sundsvall and the surrounding area with district heating to its customers. After some time, the pipes that distribute the district heating starts to rust and that leads to water leakage. When this happens, Korstaverket have to feed extra water to the system to maintain the desired supply of heating to its customers.

 

Sundsvall Energi AB wanted a more reliable calculation of their daily losses that occur on the district heating network. Their current calculation does not take the volume changes that occur when the temperature on the district heating network changes into consideration. What that does is it gives them a misleading picture of the daily losses.

 

Based on the results in this paper, the new model of calculation that takes the aforementioned issues into account is a more reliable model, as the daily losses do not suffer from unexplained peaks as the current model of calculation does.
