Abstract [en]

Research on the association between sleep duration and mental illness has been conducted primarily on elderly populations. However, there is still a dearth of literature on young and middle-aged adults. Furthermore, evidence that both short and long sleep durations are independent predictors of anxiety and depression symptoms is limited. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep duration, age, and sex, with symptoms of anxiety and depression among young and middle-aged people (18–59) in Sweden. Data from the Vasterboten Health Survey of the Swedish population study was used. A cross-sectional quantitative sample of 2037 young and middle-aged persons, out of 3406, was used. Hospital anxiety and depression questionnaires, comprising 14 variables, were used to examine mental health disorders. The association between sleep duration, sex, age strata, and mental health issues was investigated. Sleep duration seems to be a diagnostic indicator for symptoms of anxiety and depression in middle-aged and younger persons. It was also discovered that age and sex has an association with anxiety.
