With age comes sickness, poverty and oldness? : An analysis of the portrayal of elderly in Swedish press. (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyse the discourse of elderly in the daily press, in this case Swedish morning papers. This is done by using Norman Fairclough’s three dimensional model. After a read through of the newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet from January 2017 the articles mentioning the elderly was picked for analysis. The aim was to see what context elderly is portrayed in and what words and concepts were used to describe them. This is done to explore the bigger context and to see if the newspapers challenged or reproduced the current norms and stereotypes of the elderly. The study is based on theories on framing, media and democracy, ageism, binary opposites and structuralism and discourse theory. The study showed that the elderly is mostly portrayed by stereotypes and that the media doesn’t challenge current norms. The elderly was mostly portrayed as in need of help, as active despite their age or in articles about famous people that passed away. The material in the study also showed a great lack of elderly in the newspapers. The few articles that did challenge the stereotypes about elderly occurred rarely and were either in a column where the columnists point is to press for change or in articles where elderly individuals themselves were heard.
