The staff's knowledge of response to mass casualty attacks in the rescue organizations : Comparative study between staff in the ambulance, police and rescue services regarding proprietary and other information in a mass casualty attacks (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Aim: To examine the staff’s knowledge within the ambulance, police and rescue services of their own and other organizations' tasks during mass-casualty attacks. Method: This study has a quantitative approach based on a survey with 864 respondents within the fields of ambulance, police and rescue services after which seven where excluded.  Data were analyzed with bivariate statistics. Results: The study showed significant differences in knowledge between the various professional groups of the emergency organizations regarding their own and other organizations tasks at the incident site. The knowledge among staff was high within their own area of tasks. Particular distinctive within their own task was the rescue services, which had almost a 100 percent correct response rate. The knowledge was lower for all emergency organizations when it came to other organizations tasks at the incident site. The lowest level of knowledge in total regarding their own and other organizations tasks at the incident site was discovered among the ambulance staff. Conclusion: Differences in knowledge level provide different conditions regarding the staffs possibility to prepare for a mass-casualty attack. Lack of knowledge about each organizations tasks at the incident site also risk affecting the interaction between the emergency organizations and therefore their conditions to reduce suffering and save lives, why measures to increase this knowledge should be considered to be especially keen.
