Communication for integration: A qualitative study of how communication aimed to refugees works at Umeå municipality (English)
Abstract [en]

Sweden receives many refugees and many of them come to the northern area of Umeå County. A good communication with them is crucial for their integration. The Swedish language is one of the most important challenges that they must overcome to succeed in this society.

The aim of this study is to investigate communication between refugees and Viva introduction workers in Umeå. Viva is a municipality organization, which deals with migrants’ issues in Umeå. It helps for example children of migrants and adults to get access to education, to search for work and to get integrated into the society.

The study was performed with a qualitative design. Three workers with experience of working with refugees at Viva introduction were sampled and interviewed. I also analyzed four images from a regional website for receiving refugees (www.flyktingmottagningens.se). Data was collected from semi-structured interviews and analyzed using qualitative content analysis.

A good attitude when receiving refugees is important. The knowledge of language was expressed as a vital question for a god communication. Prioritizing a good reception and communication were emphasized as important. The assignment in refugee reception is clear, but the lack of resources and the wish for more knowledge about different types of communication was expressed. Positive attitudes in working with refugees exist and the number of refugees has increased in Umeå County.

This study shows that communication between refugees and workers in Umeå municipality is perceived to work well. But the Swedish language is one of the most important challenges in this area. There is also a great need to consolidate communication by using specialized methods with respect to matters of language and communication. More knowledge in intercultural communication is required to develop a capacity to deal with the great number of refugees, which increases year after year.
