Assistive technology - an opportunity for students with reading and writing disabilities (English)

Abstract

 

The purpose of this study was to try to find out how students and teachers perceive the use of assistive technology as a support for students with reading and writing disabilities. The following questions are asked: How do students use assistive tools available in education? How do students with reading and writing disabilities experience the use of assistive technology in school? How do their teachers experience the use of assistive technology in school? The study is based on classroom observations and interviews. The interviews were made individually with three students and three teachers in primary school. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analysed. The results show that the respondents in the study have a positive attitude to assistive tools, but there are obstacles. To use assistive tools to a greater extent than is done today, the teachers says that they need a lot of more time to learn more about the tools, they need better technical conditions in the school and they need continuous support and training in their use of tools and technology.
