Abstract [sv]

Sport is often used in an attempt to break down barriers between different countries and cultures. Therefore sport is used as an instrument towards international cultivation all over the world. Both national and international sports organizations and different governments are beginning to implement sport projects with the overall goal to end racism and gain a greater respect and tolerance towards people with different cultural and religious backgrounds. Barents Games is an international competition between four countries, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia. Barents Games gives the participants an opportunity to meet and compete against each other. The aim of this study was to examine the effect that an intercultural sport competition can have amongst the participants, compared to Barents Games own goals. A survey was conducted and sent out to the participating teams and organizations. The results showed that in comparison to Barents Games own goals, stating that they wish to exchange experiences between countries and break cultural barriers, the games were unable to meet these goals.
