Rethinking Inland + Island Education: Village Schools as a Catalyst for Rural Development in Norrland

Abstract [en]

This thesis sets out to investigate an existing differential between the development of urban and rural localities in northern Sweden. With current state policies adapted to urbanisation, cities emerge victorious against the countryside, which is in competition with the hegemonic notion of the urban lifestyle. Lack of financial investment in remote regions and the consequent drain towards the cities reinforce the urban standard and depict rural areas as unviable. This research identifies the opportunities and challenges of life in Norrland, the collective term for the northernmost counties in Sweden. One such challenge is the absence of schools within an adequate distance. To what extent is an alternative model of compulsory education for rural schools required to ensure successful inhabitation of sparsely populated communities in Norrland? The aim of this paper is to investigate the regional conditions and to explore how compulsory schools can be used as a tool to encourage social and economic sustainability in the concerned region, with emphasis on Holmön — a secluded community on an island in the Baltic sea between Sweden and Finland.
