Abstract [en]

In cross-country (XC) skiing the ability to use an efficient technique and working economy is essential. No studies have examined dynamic balance in relation to working economy. The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of static core training or dynamic low- load motor control training on a) dynamic balance and b) skiing economy in junior elite XC skiers. A total of 24 junior elite cross-country skiers (14 girls, 10 boys; 17.8 ± 1.1 years; 67.8 ± 10.0 kg 173.7 ± 6.4 cm) participated in this training intervention. The static training (ST) group (n =12) and the dynamic training (DT) group (n = 12) performed a 15 min training program 3 times per week for 9 weeks in addition to their usual training. Pre- and post-testing consisted of a treadmill test on roller-skis and a dynamic balance test for upper (UQYBT) and lower body (LQYBT). ST group statistically improved their results on both LQYBT and skiing economy but ST group did not improve their results on UQYBT. DT group, on the other hand, improved their results on the UQYBT. On the LQYBT DT group improved the results only on one side and they did not improve the skiing economy.
