Wheel suspension for band saw (English)
Abstract [en]

Söderhamn Eriksson AB has been manufacturing band saws since 1957. Band saws consists of two wheels between which a flexible band with teeth is tightened. In this work, new solutions are being investigated for the design of the suspension for the upper axle. The work was limited to examining only the suspension of the upper wheel. The project could be divided into three parts. The first part was an investigation on whether a rotating shaft or a stationary axle is the most suitable for the application. Second part was creating the new concept design, and the third part was to dimensioning of the parts in the design. For the investigation regarding rotating or stationary shaft, fatigue calculations were made for the different load cases and comparisons between bearing impact. It turned out that the rotating shaft is subjected to higher fatigue load but provides better lubricating properties in the bearings. The rotary shaft was chosen to be used for the rest of the work. The design presented for suspension was a fork design that holds the wheel axle on either side of the wheel. One function that the construction must be able to do is tilt the wheel while the machine is running. This feature was solved by having a moving part on one side of the fork that is on a linear steering and raised and lowered by a gear and rack mechanism. By dimensioning the parts of the concept design, it could be conluded that they would fit without having any impact on the other design requirements and still be able to sustain the loads acting on them.
