Abstract [en]

In this report we present a study of communication between a client application and microservices and also a review of how the performance and scalability of microservices are affected by different hosting choices. The review showed that containers can perform better than virtual machines and that the microservice platforms AWS Lambda and Azure Service Fabric can be good hosting alternative in some situational cases. AWS Lambda performs well with small service backends that does not do any larger process of data while Service Fabric provides developers with all the tools necessary to build a microservice systemin C# and Java. The focus of the communication study was to find out if the new query language GraphQL could perform as well as a REST architecture with JSON as data serialisation. GraphQL performed considerably worse with a higher response time in all tests.
