Abstract [en]

Beijer Electronics is a high-technology company active in industrial automation and data communication, with a large assortment including mainly slow-moving and non-moving items. The current inventory planning process is mainly manual and thus labour-intensive to operate.

Inventory management has become a strategic element in supply chain management, wherein the project's outcome objective was to develop an inventory planning process adapted to the complex high-technology industry. The overall aim was further to reduce the inventory value and at the same time increase Beijer Electronics’ stock availability to customers.

The proposed inventory planning process utilizes multi-criteria inventory classification, optimization, and safety stock, where items can be properly managed with respect to their importance and predictability.

By solving the optimization model and adding proper safety stock levels, for Beijer Electronics’ complementary products, the inventory value decreased with 26 percent. The global inventory value target was thereby surpassed with three percentage points, while the corresponding stock availability was above the target rate of 92 percent.

Beijer Electronics är ett högteknologiskt företag inom industriell automation och datakommunikation, med ett brett sortiment och ett lager med främst långsamma och stillastående produkter. Den nuvarande lagerplaneringsprocessen är främst manuell och därmed även arbetsintensiv.

Lageroptimering har blivit ett strategiskt element i supply chain management, varvid examensarbetets syfte var att utveckla en ny lagerplaneringsprocess som är bättre anpassad till den högteknologiska industrin. Det övergripande målet var dessutom att minska lagervärdet och samtidigt öka lagertillgängligheten till Beijer Electronics kunder.

Den föreslagna lagerplaneringsprocessen utnyttjar flerdimensionell lagerklassificering, optimering och säkerhetslager, där produkter kan hanteras på ett gynnsamt sätt i förhållande till deras ekonomiska betydenhet och förutsägbarhet.

Genom att lösa optimeringsmodellen och addera ett rimligt säkerhetslager, för Beijer Electronics komplementära produkter, så minskade lagervärdet med 26 procent. Det globala målet överträffades således med tre procentenheter, medan den motsvarande lagertillgängligheten låg över målsättningen som var 92 procent.
