Abstract [en]

This chapter is about a dance project, “Smiling at Death,” with an artistic focus on age and ageing and the movement of the aged body. From diaries we were able to follow what was going on in the minds of 15 participants aged 67–91, who were asked to write down things that were brought up during the rehearsal sessions. The following themes were found: “search for meaning”; “being seen as old”; “keeping watch”; “being treated as old”; “increased self-reliance”; “feeling of identity and fellowship”; and “when the body does not cooperate.” Tensions were found between social context and older individuals coping with the ageing process. No definite borderline between the healthy and the diseased body was found. Many of the participants suffered from disease but were able to take part in the project. We suggest that social workers support older people's awareness of ageist norms or norms that prevent them from experiencing well-being.
