Development measures to expand the sport for all in wrestling in Sweden (English)
Abstract [en]

Today the community sport struggles with adapting sport to society's rapid development. In order to make sport for all possible the organization of sports needs to change. The boundaries of the triangle with the children in the bottom and the taper to the elite at the top needs to be widened to create a rectangle where everyone gets a chance to participate in sport regardless of their level. The purpose of this study was to create knowledge about the term ”triangle to rectangle” and how it unfolds in the Swedish sports community. The specific purpose was to present an approach of how the Swedish Wrestling Association can implement the emergence of the new knowledge. The method used was qualitative interviews with 9 key people in Swedish wrestling. The respondents represented different authorities such as the Swedish Wrestling Association, district federations and wrestling clubs. The results showed the need of communication between all the authorities. This applies primarily to the Swedish Wrestling Association. In order for the sport to transform from ”triangle to rectangle” the leadership training must be developed to enhance the competence of voluntary leaders. This will be a major contributing factor to lifelong sport participation as the recruitment of members will increase. Different types of exercise groups for all ages must be conducted to make members to stay in the association their whole life. Competition activities for children and adolescents needs to be changed to maximize their experience and maintain their interest. The conclusions of this study were that there are several development opportunities for wrestling and Swedish sport to achieve sport for all. These efforts will be very time-consuming and received in different ways but will hopefully be welcomed in the ongoing business.
