Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Important factors to consider when educating competent therapists are the supervisory working alliance and to support supervisees development of therapeutic self-efficacy. Research shows that the supervisory working alliance and supervisees self-efficacy can partly be explained by the supervisors multicultural competence and perceived microaggressions, which is a subtle form of discrimination. The aim of this paper was to study this at Swedish psychology programs and to make a wider definition regarding on which grounds supervisees could perceive discrimination. There’s a lack of previous Swedish studies on this subject and earlier studies have been done mainly on racial discrimination. A web survey was used and complete answers from 105 students were submitted, where the average age was 27, and 75 reported that they were women. The instrument was developed especially for this study, and consisted of four scales: Supervisory Multicultural Competence, Microaggressions, Therapeutic Self-efficacy and Working Alliance Inventory - Short. The results showed that supervisees had experienced microaggressions in supervision. The categories that were mentioned most often were gender, and after that came age, ethnicity and sexuality. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that the supervisors multicultural competence could predict supervisory working alliance and supervisees therapeutic self-efficacy, and that microaggressions could predict supervisory working alliance. One limitation regarding this study was that some of the scales had not been tested for validity, which also highlights the need for future research. In conclusion, these results showed that cultural issues in supervision are of importance when aspiring to educate competent therapists.
