Evoking the illusion of dual body-ownership and dual self-location

Abstract [en]

Bodily self-consciousness is related to the feeling of owning a body and of being located somewhere in space. Different neurological cases have shown that these aspects of bodily self-consciousness can be disrupted, creating illusions like out-of-body experiences or the feeling of your body not being your own. Experimental research has demonstrated that multisensory stimulation can alter the experience of body-ownership and self-location in healthy individuals. However, it remains unclear to what extent bodily self-consciousness can be experimentally modified. The purpose of the present study was to attempt to evoke the illusion of dual body-ownership and dual self-location using congruent multisensory stimulation. Two separate experiments with repeated measures designs were conducted on 30 participants per experiment, with a total of 60 participants. Through a head- mounted display, the participants viewed two virtual bodies from different visual perspectives receiving stroking touch while the participants received the same kind of touch to their own physical bodies. Questionnaire data from experiment 1 showed that participants had the experience of feeling the touch they saw being administered to the two virtual bodies, and that they had the experience of owning both bodies at the same time. Experiment 2 also showed that the participants had the experience of being located in the position of both bodies at the same time. The results illustrate how the experience of bodily self-consciousness can be modulated in healthy participants using multisensory stimulation.
