Abstract [sv]

Sweden is not the only land that is affected by urbanization. Urbanization means that people are moving from rural areas to more urban areas. The majority of Swedish municipalities are shrinking while the rest of the municipalities grow rapidly. Sweden is a country that is beginning to have aging population, while fewer children are born, especially in the rural municipalities. Will there be a turning point, when more people choose to move back to the rural municipalities?

It is rare to talk about shrinking municipalities and instead the focus is most on those cities or municipalities that grow. This is one of the reasons why this study is about shrinking instead of growth. Because of the lack of theories and how municipalities plan for shrinking population the hope of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of how municipalities are planning to handle a negative population growth.

The aim of this bachelor is to investigate how two municipalities in two rural municipalities in Northern Sweden (Norrland) are planning for a negative population growth. The two municipalities that this study will examine are Ånge and Lycksele municipality.
