Abstract [en]

Inventory management is essential for companies that sell products, in order to place their inventories in an efficient way. This master thesis addresses this problem and evaluates seven different storage alternatives for cartons with respect to handling time, unutilised volume and fill grade. This has been done by creating three objective functions and evaluating these different factors separately. The aim of this master thesis was to decide whether a combination of storage alternatives or if use of a single one of them would be most efficient, when taking the pattern of incoming batch sizes into consideration.

Different buffer setup solutions are recommended when looking at the handling time, unutilised volume and fill grade separately. When considering all three factors together, the conclusion is that two buffer alternatives on the mezzanine is preferred to use due to good fill grade and good volume utilisation. For incoming batch sizes larger than 16 cartons, the high-rack pallet buffer with 16 cartons is preferred as a complement to the two mezzanine floor carton buffer alternatives.
