Abstract [en]

When population increases and natural resources are limited, it’s a challenge to achieve sustainable consumption. Until today there has been a strong relation between economic growth and the amount of waste. Today a large proportion of the population in developed countries are participating in a so-called consumer society, where people buy products and services upon desire and not necessarily when they are needed. There is a direct link between consumption and environmental problems and how we choose to consume can affect the future possibilities to establish a sustainable community. This report focuses on individual level of knowledge, opinions and attitudes on sustainable consumption, recycling and prevention of waste. To examine this I established a web-based survey that was sent out to house owners in Örnsköldviks municipality. The results indicated that majority of the participants are aware of the term consumer society and believe that we are over-consuming and exploiting the planet, i.e. consuming natural resources at an unsustainable rate. The study also highlights that the participants believe that sustainable consumption includes limiting consumption, recycling products and waste and purchasing climate smart products. The majority of the participants also purchased and sold products online for recycling use at least a few times a year and they were looking for the opportunity to repair items before they purchased new products. Today the problem in developed countries is not primarily about waste management but rather the constant emergence of waste. Therefore, it’s important that we start to prevent waste rather that managing it.
