Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The objective of the thesis is to highlight how art therapists in Sweden work with clients with alexithymia/alexithymia conditions. Data collection was carried out through a directed questionnaire. One hundred and thirtythree questionnaires were sent out through e-mail and 33 answers were received. A descriptive method was chosen to analyse the answers. The results show that the respondents stress the importance of establishing contact between thought, feeling and body in order to be able to help clients with alexithymia. The art therapy room was emphasised as important to create a reliable alliance between art therapist and client, as well as providing space for imagination, play and humour in the treatment work. The respondents describe different techniques and themes, for example full size portrait and scribble exercise. The responses received from the art therapists highlight the fact that alexithymia does not exist as a diagnosis in the diagnostic system for psychiatric illnesses and that alexithymia often can exist in combination with other diagnoses.
