Abstract

People’s experiences of living with Anorexia Nervosa.

Background: Anorexia Nervosa is a serious mental illness which is initially a willed weight loss where people choose to avoid food and skip meals. The disease then transitions to a deteriorated self-image and constant focus on body and weight despite their underweight. The disease is difficult to recover from and about a third of those who gets ill never recovers.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe people’s experiences of living with Anorexia Nervosa.

Method: The literature study is based on 10 qualitative studies. The results of the studies have been examined, analyzed and compiled. Databases used for the search were Cinahl, pubmed, Psycinfo.

Results: People with Anorexia Nervosa strives constantly to get the perfect body, which isn’t possible because they never get satisfied. People with Anorexia Nervosa have a deteriorated self-image and self-esteem. The results were categorized in 3 head subjects: Physical impact, Mental impact and Treatment. These were described by six subcategories.

Conclusion: People with Anorexia Nervosa have a bad self-image where denial is a common phenomenon. The disease is often used to deal with emotions that are perceived to be difficult by focusing more on weight and body shape. The social network is very important for people to recover, but the disease often creates problems in relationships, which causes difficulties finding the way back.
