Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Title: Nurses experience of caring for people with substance abuse: A literature review.

Background: In Sweden, there is about 424 500 people with substance abuse in the year of 2011. There is an increasing trend from 2006 to 2014 of the number of care visits related to drug abuse. Several studies show that nurses felt insecure in interacting with people with substance abuse. Authors of this study have not found any systematic literature review that analyze and conclude the experiences from the nurses in caring for people with substance abuse. Knowledge based on a literature review such as this one can be used to develop methods and strategies within health care and caring for people with substance abuse.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe nurses' experience in caring for people with substance abuse.

Methods: Eight qualitative studies has been reviewed, analyzed, and compiled in the results.

Results: The analysis resulted in three main categories, which is: “Create a safe caring environment”, “Lack of competence and prerequisites to provide the patients with good health care”, and “Emotional strains that makes caring difficult”.

Conclusions: Results show the importance of establishing good relationships through communication and a holistic approach. Results also show the importance of increasing motivation and participation. The nurses can through person-centered care, create a better relationship with people with substance abuse and thus create the conditions for good care.
