Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Nurse's professional experience of talking about sexual health with patients - a literature study

Background: The nurse should prevent disease and promote health. Several factors affect the sexual health of a person. There is an awareness among nurses that sexual health is important but many avoid the subject because they do not feel sufficiently competent.

Aim: The aim of the study was to describe nurses’ experiences of talking about sexual health with patients.

Method: A literature study in which eight qualitative studies were analyzed. Results: The analysis showed that few nurses talk about sexual health with patients. Lack of education, guidelines, time and private space was experienced as barriers. Age and gender of patients and nurses influence the conversation. Three main categories were identified: Courage to talk about sexual health, Obstacles in the conversation and Individual factors.

Conclusion:  Nurses avoid to have the conversation about sexual health with patients even though they know it is important. To be able to talk about sexual health with the patient nurses need to get time to establish a relationship with the patient and education in the subject of sexual health and communication models.
