Abstract [en]

Purpose: This paper investigates the socio-economic status (SES; income, education level and occupational class) inequalities and social gradient patterns in suicide ideation (SI).

Design and Methods: Data from the 2014 “Health on Equal Terms” survey from four counties in Northern Sweden was used (effective n=23,175; 50% response rate) for this cross-sectional study. National data from Statistics Sweden with socio-economic exposure indicators of income, occupation and education were linked to the survey respondents’ records. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate income, educational and occupational gradients in suicidal ideation when potential confounders were controlled for.

Results: A clear social gradient was found in suicidal ideation for income, education level and occupational class when not mutually adjusted. Income and occupation remained significant after mutual and confounder adjustment. The strongest gradient was seen for income, followed by occupation and last education.

Conclusion: The findings illustrate that there are socio-economic inequalities and a clear social gradient present in suicidal thoughts in Northern Sweden, particularly concerning income.
